The Power to Craft a Safer Future is in Our Hands.

We sent a powerful message about a more peaceful future.

On August 6-9, people around the world joined the world’s most visible demonstration for a future free from nuclear weapons.

Why Now?

A new nuclear arms race is underway, wars are raging in two regions with nuclear weapons, and technology adds complexities to an already-fragile system that hinges on the threat of mass destruction. We are only one mistake, miscalculation, or blunder away from a disaster that could change everything.

In August, #CranesForOurFuture sent a message that there is supermajority support for a world without nuclear weapons.

We’re keeping the momentum going  by bringing #CranesForOurFuture posts and messages to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago to show our leaders–those in power and those up for election–that we demand they take a different path.

Why the Crane?

The crane is a universal symbol of peace.

A single girl started a movement.

After 11-year-old Sadako Sasaki was diagnosed with radiation-induced leukemia a decade after the bombing in Hiroshima, she attempted to fold 1,000 paper cranes in the hopes that her wish to live would be granted.

While Sadako did not survive, her legacy of paper cranes did, inspiring her classmates, and then the world, with a message of peace, hope, and resilience. Today, people all around the world fold cranes in her honor.

Who We Are

#CranesForOurFuture was established by the Hiroshima Prefecture, Nagasaki Prefecture, the Nuclear Threat Initiative, and Hiroshima Organization for Global Peace. We are joined by a broad coalition of institutions and public figures committed to a safer future for all in a world without nuclear weapons.
